The Non-Negotiable Skincare Rule
If there is one absolute non-negotiable rule in my treatment room, it’s this: daily sunscreen is your skin’s ultimate protector.
So many of my clients ask me about the secret to preventing wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and loss of firmness. While advanced treatments like microchanneling and HIFU do incredible work to rebuild collagen, sunscreen is what protects that investment. In fact, up to 90% of visible skin aging is caused by sun exposure! Incorporating a high-quality, safe, and non-toxic SPF into your daily routine is truly the single best thing you can do for your skin’s future.
I love helping my clients build great skincare habits, so let’s clear up a few common sunscreen myths:
Myth 1: "It’s cloudy or cold today, so I don’t need SPF."
Don't let overcast skies fool you! Up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays pass right through cloud cover. The same goes for the winter months. Even when we are bundled up in coats here in Charlotte, those rays are still at work. And if you happen to travel somewhere snowy, watch out—snow reflects up to 80% of UV radiation, effectively doubling your exposure! Cold weather does not mean a break from sun protection.
Myth 2: "Applying it once in the morning is enough."
Applying SPF 30 or higher in the morning is a fantastic start, but protection wears off throughout the day. To keep your skin fully guarded against damage and skin cancer, reapplication every two hours is essential—especially if you are spending time outdoors enjoying everything Charlotte has to offer.
Myth 3: "My clothes and melanin fully protect me."
Skin damage does not discriminate! All skin tones and ethnicities require UV protection to maintain healthy skin and guard against serious damage. Additionally, standard light-colored summer clothing usually only provides an SPF equivalent of about 4 to 6, meaning UV rays easily reach your skin underneath.
Protecting your skin doesn't have to feel like a chore. I am always so excited to help my clients find lightweight, non-toxic formulations that feel luxurious and fit seamlessly into their daily routine without leaving a heavy or chalky residue.
If you are stepping outside—no matter the season or the weather—don't forget your sunscreen. Your future skin will thank you!
